BoEG (Bureau of Edi Gardens): your data

We are a hobby project, not a government agency, and not affiliated with the Bureau of Meteorology or the City of Yarra. We collect as little as we can, never sell it, and never ask who you are.

What we collect, and why

WhatWhenWhy
Full check-in survey: your answers, the spot as a grid reference (to about 7 m), the time, any comment you type, and the forecast for that spot and timeOnly when you press Check inTo measure how good the forecast is and to improve it
Emoji check-ins (bubbles): up to three emojis from a fixed list, the spot rounded to about 7 m, and the time. These are public: everyone sees the bubble over that spot for three hoursOnly when you post oneA quick, word-free "how is it here?" for other visitors
Pulse survey answersOnly when you submit itTo learn what makes a good park day
SuggestionsOnly when you send oneTo decide what to build. Shown publicly only after we approve them
Usage events: which features were used (e.g. "dropped a pin in square P15", "saved a story"), the date shown, and how you arrived (e.g. from Instagram)While you use the site, unless your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not TrackTo see which features are worth keeping
With each usage event, coarse visit context: browser family (e.g. Safari), operating system, phone, tablet or computer, window width to the nearest 100 px, language, the site that linked you here, whether the site is installed, and how many times this device has visited; plus the country, state and suburb that Cloudflare's network reports for the connection. Never your IP addressWhile you use the site, unless your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not TrackTo know how many people use it, from where and on what, so we fix what matters
Page views (Cloudflare Web Analytics)Each visitCounting visits. Cookieless: it doesn't identify you

Every record carries a random device code made in your browser (stored in your browser's local storage), so we can count repeat visitors without knowing who you are. Clear your site data to reset it.

Kept only on your device

Your settings and saved spots (persona, preferences, map and display choices, saved spots and their names) stay in your browser's local storage. They are never sent to us. Clear your site data, or use Reset all settings under ⚙, to remove them.

What we don't collect

No names, emails, accounts, cookies for tracking, or advertising IDs. We don't store IP addresses: to stop spam we keep a scrambled, daily-changing code for one minute. "Use my location" turns your position into a grid square in your browser; your coordinates aren't sent anywhere.

Third parties

Weather comes through our own server (which caches Open-Meteo's forecast), as do VicEmergency incidents and plane positions (OpenSky Network); fonts and code are served from this site. Your browser contacts other services directly only in these cases: public holidays are fetched from Nager.Date; if our server cannot be reached, the forecast is fetched from Open-Meteo directly; and Cloudflare Web Analytics loads its counting script from Cloudflare. Like any web request, these show the service your IP address; nothing else is sent. Otherwise your browser talks only to this domain, unless you choose to open Snap Send Solve, the council's forms, maps or a share app.

Where it's kept

On Cloudflare (Pages, D1 database and Web Analytics). Cloudflare may process data outside Australia. Check-ins and survey answers are kept for up to three years, usage events for one year. Free-text comments in check-ins are never published.

Your choices

Everything is optional. To see what your device has sent, use Export my data in the site's menu. To have it deleted, send us your device code (shown in that export) through Suggest a feature or the Instagram account, and we'll remove every record with it.

To reach the Bureau, including to report a security problem with this site, send a message to @bureauofedigardens on Instagram, or use Report a missing tree or a map error in the site's menu.
